No poems or songs yet this year?

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

It is way more fun watching, kibitzing, chatting, bouncing strategies, predicting/guessing, cheering for absolutely everyone out on the trail when it's done with a group of like-minded fans. And if one has a particular talent for limericks, all the better, Sugarriver. :D

And, T, what do you have for boats there in the rack in the back of the yard? Me thinks you're a paddler as well as dog handler, horseman, photographer, climber, restauranteur, teacher....

The GPS Tracker is trhe lastest great thing
46 MPH it told us was the speed of Jeff King.

Martin thought his unit needed some freah air
To a pilot he said "take this damn thing over there"

On Lances GPS tracker his team lifted their leg
O no!! Please don't do that Russ Ion would beg

Its a glimpse of the future not all of us can yet aford
This year for the tracker I think its "Back to the drawing board".

OK, I think it's time I rolled out the song I wrote during the Kusko 300 in a fit of inspiration. DISCLAIMER: I do not ordinarily listen to hard rock, so do not take this song's source as evidence that I am a headbanger. I also apologise for the fact that it does not accurately reflect the current standings and, indeed, reflects only the bias of the writer.

"Run, Buser Boys, Run!"--to the tune of "The Wild and the Young" by Quiet Riot (Google the original lyrics if necessary)

VERSE 1: Sled dog racing's not for the faint of heart--
It takes years of dedication
in Alaska, where mushing got its start,
The talent's passed through generations

From the town of Big Lake comes a dynamic duo
With a burning competitive drive--

CHORUS: Run, Buser Boys, run!
"Good luck on the trail"
Run, Buser Boys, run--
We know you'll prevail
The race never ends
For father and son
Run, Buser Boys, run!

VERSE 2: Now, if Martin's on top of his game
The record time could be falling
And since Rohn's had a taste of fame
Could it be that the child has found his calling?

Two great story lines: rookie's "trial by fire"
And the four-time champ's quest to win five!

CHORUS, repeat the "Two great story lines" part again; CHORUS twice, then fade out with an "Ohhhh right."

---
I must be nuts....

Here's a bit of free verse:

The frosted fingers of cold pinch my skin.
False images dance before me like ghosts.
I dodge terrifying trees where there are none,
Call out to friends who disappear
Into the snowy veils that surround me.
I jolt,
Suddenly aware
Of the whoosh of my runners
The panting of my dog team
Running across the icy expanse.
Alone with creation,
We survive,
We continue,
We prevail
We are victors,
Together

Thanks, sugarriver. I got inspired last night while waiting for my daughter's drama to begin and finished writing it while the drama troupe celebrated at MacDonalds afterwards. I'm glad I was able to capture the spirit of mushing, even though I've never experienced it myself. I'm going to use this poem as an example for a unit study I'm doing on Iditarod with a group of homeschoolers. If you look closely, you can spot several poetic elements: alliteration, simile, metaphor, personification and onomatopoeia.
