The restart

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Looks like Lance roared by Jessie at a whopping 2 miles per hour.

I'm wondering who else is in the clump that isn't being tracked!

I guess we've just got to get used to the machinations of this thing. Jessie just sprinted by Lance. Maybe I don't need to look at it so often.

I read somewhere that the tracking device feeds a signal to the satellite every fifteen minutes (4 times per hour) and records that exact moment -- so the speed might show 0 if the team is at a temporary, momentary stop. The feeds are not coordinated, so each team is feeding data on a different schedule -- hence they seem to be jumping the lead, when they are probably all really running pretty smoothly. After the teams get all spread out in a day or so it should give us a really good feel for the race, among these fifteen teams. Remember there are 80 or so teams that are not carrying the device, and one or two or three of them may in fact be in front or well up toward the front.

This is a GREAT toy for us spectators, but the mushers might not like it when it's all said and done. :D :D :D

really disapointed, for the second day running they completely ignored kim franklin, yesterday it was because they were talking to someone from the national guard, and now they went to a break while she ran, im so gutted!

i know these guys have breaks to put in for sponsors, but its a real shame.

go kim go we'll be rooting for you lass!!!!

Edit:
Lost a big hunk of my post...
What I *sent* was (paraphrased):
"The tracking tool looks to be mostly useful in general tracking over the long haul, or in nail-biting situations like the runs into bonus checkpoints (like 'first to the Yukon') or in the run into Safety or the run into Nome."
