Skwentna Checkpoint #1

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Looks like Kim is in Skwentna now.....funny, at the rookie meeting, I think it was Jeff, said, "You can't go wrong with lots of rest the first couple of days. In fact, maybe get a hotel room in Knik the first night." Doesn't go thru there anymore, but maybe Kim is taking Jeff's advice....and Mitch is a big proponent of lots of rest at the front....positive spiral....the more they rest, the faster they run, so they can get more rest at the next checkpoint, etc. Their rookie teams are watched (Seavey) REAL close to make sure they aren't cutting rest at the front of the race, it is that important.

Makes sense. OTOH, they can't take too long - too much rest at each checkpoint starts to add up, and then the trail sweepers get antsy...

The stats show Benedikt Beisch's speed from Skwentna to Finger Lake as an incredible 15.88 mph! Can it be?

I've been wondering about that all evening. Haven't been able to confirm.
