Helicopter crash

Postby cat » Wed Mar 05, 2008 6:27 pm

I just got the tail-end of a news report on TV about a helicopter following the race crashing near Rainy Pass with no major injuries.

Does anyone know if that was an II heli?

How awful, but it's good to hear there were no major injuries.

I just read that on Jeff King's website. It was the Discovery Channel Helicopter following Rachal.

Yes, it was an independent company hired to video the Iditarod. I think this happened last evening or yesterday about 85 miles south of McGrath.

Not good, not good.. But in a way, it is actually amazing that there are so few incidents with all the flying taking place along the trail.
I mean AK has a lot of weather, snow, hard wind , low visibility and also many small airstrips which I guess is not controlled in any way, also with no actual weather service available.
Those pilots must be real good and they must be real conscious about the hazards related to flying in the remote areas of AK. I really take my hat of and salute them for the fantastic job that they are doing.

I always fear something like this happening on the race. I'm so glad it wasn't any worse than it was. :( :)

I'm so happy they walked away from the crash. I talked to one of the men at the Millenium hotel on Saturday. I noticed all the camera equipment so I had to ask. He said they were filming a special to be aired on the discovery channel. His best estimate was it would air sometime in October.
He was excited to be doing this assignment and was looking foward to getting out to the checkpoints.
