Koyuk CP #1

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. For a while now, Jeff seems to be consistantly staying 1 to 2 miles behind Lance, He's probably happy to have Lance's dogs setting the trail for him to cruise over.

Must be getting intense for Mackey and King. Google earth gives Mackey 1.34 mi lead at updates 3:40 and 3:42 respectively.
One would think they'd be able to see each other, unless there are some serious ice jumbles. And Lance thought he had a sore neck on the YQ

Jeff has drafted Lance all the way across the Sound, and they are only an hour or so out of Koyuk. They should reach the CP around 1:30 or 2:00.

I wonder if Lance is worried yet. Jeff can obviously run as fast or faster, so Lance may have to beat him by cutting his rest time short. Lance's puppies may be tired after breaking trail for 50 miles.

I had heard from someone's post-Sam maybe? That the trail around Koyuk was hard and fast so maybe there hasn't been much of a trail to break?
Still think it is a mental game more than anything with King shadowing Lance for the last couple of days.....
