Anchorage: Roll Call & Recommendations

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

For a seafood restaurant in Anchorage, most people will say "Simon and Seaforts" which is located in the downtown area

Simon and Seaforts

http://www.r-u-i.com/sim/menu.php
420 L St
Anchorage, AK 99501
(907) 274-3502

The above is a little spendy and my place that is reasonable is Seafood Galley. It also has great prime rib and don't leave out their salad bar.

My recommendation for seafood in Anchortown is

Sea Galley Restaurant

4101 Credit Union Dr
Anchorage
(907) 563-3520

Eh, all of them? :-)
To be honest, I'm not a very patriotic person :-)
Seeing someone waving the norwegian flag does not give me any special feeling.
And; I don't need someone to be a winner to enjoy following their race.

That said; I very much like what I see of both Kjetil and Sigrid, and would very much like them to both to have the race of their lives :-)
And - for this years ROTY, I'll vote for Benoit Gerard, Robert Sorlie's funny french former handler.
He has been in Kotzebue, with John Baker this year. Baker will also be in my top 10 hopes :-)
Met Benoit's fiance some months ago - we ate dinner together on the way home from a dog show.

What about you?

Here is our favoritist(I know not a word) place to eat lunch...it is not fast food...not fried food...but just good for you food(some might call it granola-ish or hippy food)...but really it is the best place in town to get a sandwich(and yes they serve meat) and a good bowl of soup. (this place has FREE wi-fi)

The Middle Way Cafe http://www.middlewaycafe.com/

Another favorite for a good cup o' joe and nice atmosphere...and FREE wi-fi too.

Kaladi Bros. http://www.kaladi.com/cafe_locations_tit.cfm

And for those of you wanting to get a good book about the Iditarod...then you must go to Anchorages version of Portland, OR Powell's Books.

Titlewave
New & Used Books http://www.wavebooks.com/catalog/index.php

BTW all of these places are near REI, Great Outdoor Clothing Co. & AMH(Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking)

Oh and here is another one...this is a great place to get some yummy halibut taco's...enjoy some good beer and of course the scenery is quite amusing.

Humpy's
http://www.humpys.com/

Geesh...we have so many favorites...but this is a great place too...the Calamari is oh so yummy and well their beer is good too...plus the Seared Ahi is Rick's favorite.

Glacier Brewhouse
http://www.glacierbrewhouse.com/

Hope this helps with you newbies in Anchorage, AK

hugs,
Tiff Holt :)

Wow! Great suggestions!

As SamatUnk said, Simon & Seaforts can be spendy...but there is a way around that that we locals use. We get a seat in the bar with the $1mil view of the Inlet & eat halibut & chips or battered clams for cheap! Plus they draw a great Guinness.

Jeannie B.... I am looking forward to meeting you!

Another good option is the Iditarod Book Fair at the Millennium Hotel on Friday 11:30-1. Mith & I are going to check that out.

Also, I've had a good salmon taco at the Flying Machine in the Millennium. A good place to hang out with I-fans.

Cat,

Yep...correct...the bar area at Simon's has windows by the view, and is less formal.

A great, inexpensive option is to get their appetizer sampler, which is HUGE and has three trays. Includes shrimp, filet cubes marinated in something or other, and a killer crab / avacado dip. They used to have Asiago enrusted halibut that was one my favorites, but I think discontinued that last year. Other appetizers are good for a meal if you get a few to a table and share.

However, if you sign up for there email specials, which I just did, you get a $15 coupon to print out to apply to your meal. Doesn't seem to have any strings. They also validate parking, if I remember correclty.

Regards,

Traditionally, the Saturday ADN paper has a flier with all the pics/numbers/bio of mushers- most of us are carrying this at the ceremonial to get the line-up.
