I don't think carbon will be a problem in the cold, not more than other metals. It's used in ski poles.. and in an article I found, he used carbon last year too.

oh-- and regarding the rule change, I really don't think it's fair to change the rule after mushers have started to sign up. I think rule changes should be done between the end of the race and start of sign-up.
