Yukon Quest Thread

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

I realize my foolishness now. But it almost looked plausible at magnification on the replay. When I watched it again on a static map, it was obvious.
Carry on fellow mushing fans.

Just looking at the numbers and Hugh(I hope to meet in person some day)'s somewhat predictable dropping speed. I see Matt Hall and his surging speed giving Brent his greatest challenge. I'll never count Allen or any of the other mushers out of course.

Thank you! It looks like Brent is setting up for a fast normal run, a 4-5 hour rest and a long run mirroring the first half of the race.

As we watch Matt Hall make his move in this race I thought I would share this comment made after one of Jake Berkowitz's posts
The biggest mistake anyone could make is to underestimate Matt, whether it be in dog mushing, playing poker, or just about anything really. Give him 30 seconds to think out a strategy and he will undoubtedly do it better, neater, and faster than the one beside him

Its kind of obnoxious really Hahahahahahaha
. Obviously a friend of his and someone who knows him well

Matt Hall is running a Dallas Seavey type of race in the Quest.

Start a little slow, then play catch up, then play speed up and then get the train a running for a fast finish. Works for Dallas in the Iditarod. Might work for Matt in the Quest.

Two young guns heading for a shoot out some day??

With as little rest as Matt has had, I don't see him keeping up the pace. If Brent takes two runs to Two rivers with a 5 hour break in Central, I think he will steadily push ahead of Matt in the mountains.

These next couple of hours will tell the tale won't it. Although they are running nose to tail we will find out going over Eagle if the difference in rest accounts for anything. Although there is a difference in rest Matt hasn't been cutting rest. His run/rest ratio for the last couple of legs has been pretty standard for what it takes to maintain a strong team. I haven't checked today but at last report the weather on Eagle has been quiet. It is worth remembering that this is the steep side of Eagle.
