This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Sass Scratches
Sunday, February 12, 2017
This evening at 7:02pm veteran musher Brent Sass (bib #14) from Eureka, Alaska scratched from the race in Central, Alaska.

Sass requested assistance via his Spot Tracker approximately 16 miles outside of Central, Alaska due to concern over the safety of two dogs, Caputo and Healy, on his team. The Yukon Quest responded to this call, sending a Trailbreaker, Race Veterinarian and Official out to the location. As per Trail Procedure Rule #13 he would have been allowed to continue the race but made the decision to scratch once the two dogs were brought to Central for a vet check.

The two dogs, Caputo and Healy, were checked and are both in stable condition.

Wow Brent scratched. It looked like something was wrong. His run up Birch Creek was disjointed and slooow.

Oh no! :o

I really don't like the use of "stable condition", sounds serious.. I hope they recover nicely.

Matt has finished his climb and is five miles from 101 mile!

Hugh is still in Central, Allen and Ed going steady against Central.

Paige is also on her way to Central.

Right now it seem to be a close race between Allen and Ed, but there are still miles to go..

A bit more--but not much more--info on Sass. What a heartbreaker. At least the dogs appear to be okay, but the phrase "they are NOW in stable condition" is worrisome. (Emphasis mine.)
