The "official Iditarod website" indicates that Martin has declared his 24 in Manley. The rules state:"2017 Race" Rule 7of 16. Twenty Four-Hour Stop:
A musher must take one mandatory twenty-four (24) hour stop during the race. The twenty-four (24) hour stop may be taken at the musher’s option at a time most beneficial to the dogs. The starting differential will be adjusted during each team’s twenty-four (24) hour stop. It is the musher’s responsibility to remain for the entire twenty-four (24) hour period plus starting differential. The ITC will give each musher the required time information prior to leaving the starting line.

Well, there goes my shot at winning the "Furthest to 24" contest. :D
But seriously, I hope Martin and the dogs are okay. That's awfully early to be declaring your 24, isn't it?

I was thinking about when, just a few years back, Martin went long for his 24 (to Anvik/Grayling/?) and that didn't work out at all.

Martin has also taken his 24 early before -- in Rohn twice after running straight through non-stop from Willow. It's always been a challenge to predict Martin's strategy.

Remember that a musher can "declare" their 24 and then change their mind and move on without consequence. Martin has been known to do this before -- as have other mushers -- "declaring" at every check point and then deciding whether to stay or move on. It's better to "declare" if you think you might have a problem to resolve before moving on, then just move on out when you are ready. There is also some gamesmanship involved, particularly among some of the old-time pre-tracker mushers when it was possible to make a surprise move that might go undetected for a while.''

Remember when Martin sent his tracker on an airplane ride out of Cripple while he was taking his 24?

It ain't over til it's over. :D :D :D :D

I agree Txbennett, Declaring at every stop till you really do it, Was and Is a safe thing to do. If you find out you needed to do it and didn't declare, the time resting until you declare is just wasted time!,{{ i.e. resting time that does not count toward the official 24, which would only start after you "declare". (Edited to agree with Mira below)!}}

Not exactly wasted since they need the rest, but yes, it's smart. But a bit annoying if everyone does it, I think the checkpoints have different places for long-term and short-term resting. At least those with many 24h mushers (like Takotna).

But Martin has gone long and rested and he has did one long run before taking 24 - hard to tell.

Looks like Aliy has passed and is on her way to Tanana

Martin out of Manley- After a 5hr 50min stop, he has pulled the hook and is out of Manley. So much for the 24!!

I was just thinking it sounded too soon to stop for 24 hours when his dogs were banging in their harnesses upon arrival.

Didn't most, in 2015, take their 24 in Huslia? Or am I thinking of something else?
