I know exactly what you mean. It's hard to make any sense out of anything when they mix 8 and 24 hours rest, and marker runs come in another phase in the race than usual.

Sigh.

But yes, this route have more options and isn't that known making it harder to predict. But I also think the race will normalise itself when they gets to Kaltag and the portage to the coast (perhaps even after Huslia, but at least at that stage).

My guess is that both Hugh and Jeff are planning to take their 24 in Huslia (or maybe Koyukuk for Hugh, the wild man). Hugh had about a 3 hour lead on Jeff leaving Ruby, but he may be planning more rest between check points. Jeff rested 3 hours longer than Hugh in Ruby -- so run/rest when and where may be a factor between them. In previous races Hugh has preferred to rest in check points instead of camping out, with more musher-comforts provided.

Mitch, Joar, Nic and Pete are all in Galena -- 5 to 6 hours past Ruby -- but they all need to take both the 8 and the 24.

It's a horse race -- errrr -- make that a dog race!

We will know more when the real race starts in Kaltag, or Unalakleet.

Hang in there Mamamia -- you and JeanieB are looking good in FantasyMushing.

We have two topics for mandatory rests now.. oh well.. Here's my current list, assuming they take 24 and not 8. Nicolas might be on 8, same with Rick and Nathan. The rest of them have already "confirmed" they are taking 24 (don't trust that much) or have already stayed more than 8 hours. Sorted by checkpoint and time within the checkpoint:

#18 Dallas Seavey can leave at 09th. Mar at 21:16 from Ruby.
#29 Wade Marrs can leave at 09th. Mar at 20:08 from Ruby.
#21 Richie Diehl can leave at 10th. Mar at 01:15 from Ruby.
#15 Martin Buser can leave at 10th. Mar at 03:02 from Ruby.
#59 Ken Anderson can leave at 10th. Mar at 04:51 from Ruby.
#27 Rick Casillo can leave at 10th. Mar at 06:37 from Ruby.

#38 Joar L. Ulsom can leave at 10th. Mar at 07:38 from Galena.
#24 Nicolas Petit can leave at 10th. Mar at 09:03 from Galena
#25 Peter Kaiser can leave at 10th. Mar at 10:23 from Galena.
#14 Ray Redington jr. can leave at 10th. Mar at 12:46 from Galena.

It's a bit of a navigation hassle on the Irod website (no surprise) to find the 2017 Mandatory rests rules .

Race Center > Idotarod Rules > click the 2017 Race Rules to open the pdf rules document. Then go to (#13) Mandatory Stops section

http://d3r6t1k4mqz5i.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/2017-race-rules-10-31-16.pdf?x86326

Rule 13
Mandatory Stops

A musher must personally sign in and out to start and complete all
mandatory stops.

Twenty Four Hour Stop:
A musher must take one mandatory twenty four (24) hour stop during
the race. The twenty four (24) hour stop may be taken at the musher’s option at a time most beneficial to the dogs. The starting differential will be adjusted during each team’s twenty four (24) hour stop. It is the musher’s responsibility to remain for the entire twenty four (24) hour period plus starting differential. The ITC will
give each musher the required time information prior to leaving the starting line.

Eight Hour Mandatory Stops:
In addition to the mandatory twenty four (24) hour stop, a musher must take one eight (8) hour stop on the Yukon River, including Shageluk in odd numbered years,
and one eight (8) hour stop at White Mountain.
None of the mandatory stops may be combined.

Hi dilli ( waves Hi )

Did anyone notice that rookie Nicolas Vanier (r) left Ruby with 7 hours 58 minutes rest, assuming he meant it to be his man 8, but stats do NOT have his man 8 checked off....I truly hope this is just a typo
