Shrinking teams

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

The analytics are pretty great to use to try and look at run rests.

Nick petit's are quite interesting too

Agreed on Nic's team.

In the video of him "first to the Yukon dinner" (first to the Yukon? haven't they been on the Yukon all the time??) he mentioned that he doesn't make a race plan, just runs the team he has in front of him.

I appreciate someone who does it by feel, but can't help but wonder if that has come back to bite him in the past.

I really wanted to put Richie in my TTPs, so at the last minute opted to jettison Nic in favor of Richie - reasoning that Nic has crashed and burned a few times, so he was the least reliable of my original TTPs. Of course, now Richie's down to 13 dogs, while Nic still has all 16, so what do I know? :))

I'm going with the thought that Richie is inexperienced so hyper-cautious - dropping dogs before they might cause him to have to slow down?

No, Tanana river meets Yukon river in Tanana.

Anyhow, I don't think being down to 13 is very bad, of course it depends a bit off why you dropped them. Many mushers have some inexperienced dogs on their team, and they drop those dogs quite fast if showing sign of any problems.

Just realised, looking at the map, that they were on the Tanana River from FBs to Tanana where the two rivers meet up:

Dallas was saying he will drop 2 or maybe 3 when he leaves his 24. He did say he thought it was a little early to be down to 13.

This was Wednesday:

Shrinkiest teams, currently:

Ryan Anderson - 11 dogs
Sebastien Vergnaud - started with 12, so doesn't count
Ryan Red - 13
Richie - 13
Karin - 13
Monica - 13
Justin High - 13

This is Friday:

Sebastien - 11 (only dropped one so far)
Justin High - 11
Ryan Anderson - 11 (still)
Ryan Red - 12
Anna - 12
Karin - 12
Roger Lee - 12
Kat - 13
Noah - 13
Richie - 13 (still)
Lars - 13
Ketil - 13
Kristin - 13
Dave Delcourt - 13
Mark Selland - 13
Monica - 13 (still)

The attrition rate is really low this year, which is interesting. Slower trail so less wrist injuries?
