Shrinking teams

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Yes, but it's a major point. Dogs get dropped because they're not fit to be with the team and that can be anything. Like sore wrists or shoulders or just not able to play along.

Another depressing media advisory about one of John Baker's dropped dogs, but not ITC's fault this time.

No dogs and traffic should mix. :(

Thinking of the people 'in charge' of Groovey and how sad they feel.

A male dog from Katherine Keith’s race team died overnight, shortly before the Koyuk checkpoint.

At about 1 a.m., 4-year-old Flash “collapsed in harness and died shortly thereafter,” according to a release from the Iditarod Trail Committee.

The incident occurred about 10 miles before Keith’s arrival in Koyuk, the release says.

A necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

From Scott:
Shilling was my dog... (Roger leased this team from me) Per Roger and the vets in unalakleet, "this was a sudden death.. Most likely a cardiac event"... Roger has been taking long rests and, per the vets, he's taking great care of the team! I love all my dogs and am saddened by his death but folks.. This happens to humans everyday... Take care of yourselves and tell/show your loved ones (human and dogs) you love em everyday!!

I was poking around on KNOM, looking to see if they were putting up interviews of the native mushers (in the past they have focused on them - Pete, John, and just now, Richie). Didn't find that (yet), but did find this:
