Ruby - Galena - Huslia

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

two hours - see my post in "Trail Snippets" (which should be here, but ended up over there for some reason).

Not long enough for him to continue past Huslia. Bad for Dallas.

Ah. Iditarod Insider guys (Greg Heister, Bruce Lee, Joe Runyan) in Huslia - they say it's 20° there.

They're saying how wonderful it is for the dogs taking their 24 in Huslia.

Unfortunately not so good for those out on the trail - that maybe explains Dallas shutting down this afternoon.

It makes sense if you look at the bigger picture. He took his 24 a little earlier than he wanted to in Ruby. He got off his 24, ran thru Galena, ran for 8 hours and stopped for 3h 15m. He starts going again but now it is 8:45 am so he runs 6h 20m and stops at 2:35p for a 2h 25m rest in the heat of the day. Now he is running again starting at nearly 5 pm. We've seen him do this before. He is taking it easy and not throwing away all the benefits of his 24 hour on a monster run to Huslia. I also suspect that he is holding onto that Yukon 8 and saving it for later. This is classic Dallas monster building. He knows that as long as he is within a couple of hours of the front he can catch them. He is building speed by taking more rest.

HA! Wade went through Huslia! I was wondering if he or Dallas would do it but I didn't dare type it. It is still early in the evening, they have had plenty of rest on the trail and there is a cabin stocked with firewood only 17 miles down trail. My thoughts were that it would tell us a lot about the quality of their teams if they were to go through or stay. It is worth noting that Wade rested 4 hours at his last stop whereas Dallas rested only a little over 2 hours. Go Wade!

i think wade has just blown the seavey's plans apart, dallas will have to travel during the heat of the day where as Wade can travel at night and rest in the warmth and that puts him at an advantage, looking at the video of him trying to get through the check point as quick as possibly, and was a bit miffed when the checked wanted to check his madatory gear and made sure she did it there and then and not at his drop bags.

rest

dallas 48 hrs (24)
mitch 57 (24 )
wade 55 (24 )
nick 59 ( 24 + 8 )
