Huslia-Koyukuk-Nulato

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Ralph Johannessen has decided that he is still in this. You may remember he was at the front of the race in the first half and arrived in Huslia 5th. His low bib number plus getting passed by those who had already 24'd meant he left Huslia 19th. He also had a terrible start time of 07:07. He ran for 5h then rested for 2.5 at around noon. He then ran another 8h 45m to Koyukuk and has gone through the checkpoint. This puts him back up to the front of the pack in 9th place. He's not exactly burning up the trail at 7.6mph. The interesting thing about Ralph's race is that all of his runs average 8 or more hours and he does these runs on 3-4 hours rest. It reminds me of the way Sorlie used to run. Again we will see how this pays off but it seems this is how his team is trained to run so it will be interesting to watch.

John Baker has appeared back in the top 10 after leaving Huslia 20th. His race is interesting because like Ralph he has been doing very long runs with 4 hour rests. His runs have been between 8 and 9 hours long and an 11 hour run into Huslia for his 24. He left Huslia at 07:28 and ran 10 hours stopping at 17:30. An interesting strategy considering how warm it was today. That left him with only a short 3 hour run into Koyukuk. Given this pattern I would expect him to run all the way to Kaltag tonight.

Matts Petterson has decided to roll the Yukon dice and run through Koyukuk. He was 30th back in Galena. He was 23rd leaving Huslia after a 6 hour rest. He ran for 5:45, rested for 2:50 and has been running now for 7.5 as he goes through the checkpoint. This puts him in 11th place and he is moving pretty well at 8.1mph.

Thank you so much for all your analysis.

Regarding Ralph, I think it isn't a very farfetched description of how they thinks. In Femundsløpet in January both Ralph and Lars (Monsen) had much longer runs than the others, both setting the pace for iditarod

Note of interest on Matts 4 legged team .. he's running 6 of Brent Sass's dogs .
U-Turn, Sasha, Sluice, Louisa, Josephine, Doc
He's dropped 2 .. don't know if they were his or Brent's. Sluice and Doc were on his ill-fated Quest team.

Good tip, Dili! I wonder when that deal was hatched? Maybe Brent was always going to loan the dogs (even prior to him deciding to scratch) and he just opted to throw Sluice in there as a bonus (assuming Sluice, of all the dogs listed, was most likely to be in Brent's team).

I worry that Brent will retire from racing altogether, so perhaps the fact that he opted to send Sluice is an encouraging sign?
