Finnmarksløpet 2017

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Did you know that participants in this year's FL-1000 are competing for a cabin worth 550,000 NOK? The team with the best result from the FL-1000 race 2016 and 2017 accumulated, will win a cabin worth NOK 550,000. The popular prize is donated by Saltdalshytta – a Finnmarksløpet partner since 2008

The battle for the cabin is a great carrot for participants, and a way to encourage mushers to come back year after year.

In 2017, the cabin will be awarded for the fifth time in the Finnmark Race history.

Do they get to use it for 2 years? Or do they get a different cabin they get to keep?? :? Cool, in either case!

No, they get a cabin to be build, but I think they have to find a property to build the cabin on. Saltdalshytta is a company making cabins.

The front is now in Levajok, then they're off to Karasjok. Thhey have had lots of bad weather this year, so the front hesitated to leave Sirbma, making more teams able to catch up. One team went and turned around when hitting the storm in the mountains.

There's a nice web cam in Karasjok.

I highly recommend looking at the Karasjok webcam, of course the front will be gone until US wake up, but more mushers will come. Right now the doggies are sleeping under their blankets, you can see a cooker going on (the flames are visible) and a musher is hustling around.

Do you have the link?

(I'm thinking a cabin would be way more useful to interior AK mushers than the truck (that they can't use because there are no roads) :) )
