This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Kaltag- Population 234 -- This town signals a brief respite from the driving winds as the trail from here leads overland through Kaltag Portage to the coast of Norton Sound where the winds take on new meaning. Kaltag is the home of Virginia Kalland, widow of Edgar Kalland who was one of the original mushers who helped carry life saving diphtheria serum along this trail in 1925. She also owns one of Kaltag’s three stores.

Back to familiar trail that is well used. Mitch will be first to Kaltag and must take his 8!

reports are of a hard fast trail on that section. mitch might have lit the after burners whilst the others might be riding the drag, keeping it under the teams top speed to save it for the coast. Mitch had to make a bit of a blast to try and put space between him for his 8

He also might have "unloaded" 2 dogs from his sled and run with them all in harness into his 8 hour break.
