Kaltag - Unalakleet

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

According to ADN a couple of days ago ..."Two-time champion Mitch Seavey has two compartments on his front sled runners to haul dogs, a plastic-bottom compartment behind where he stands on the sled runners, accessible by a small, swinging door and one in his front sled. He can carry four dogs between the two, he said.

"It's similar as far as hauling," he said. "But for me, it's harder for me to haul as much stuff — food and straw.""

Mitch been resting for almost two hours and Wade will pass him soon. I guess Mitch will go through Unalakleet and continue to Shaktoolik.

Nicolas and Joar have both passed Dallas.

Did Dallas stop and rest? And if so - at what mileage and for how long?

Remember he only stayed 2:45 in Kaltag to get out ahead of Wade and chase Mitch.

Watching the vid of Dallas in Kaltag switching his gear from the super-sled to his "racing sled". He say the big sled had served him well, but that it was *really* heavy to muscle around, esp when it had four dogs in it. You had to *drive* it all the time, and actively muscle it around all the corners. So I guess we need to remember that hauling dogs isn't "free" - both you and your team have to work for it. And listening to others talking about "I had to haul a dog, then two dogs..." and how their team had to work extra because of that. Again - not a free advantage.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

I wondered if he will switch sled in Kaltag or Unalakleet, I guess I got the answer now...

I looked at the forecast for the coast, doesn't look too bad.
