Koyuk - Elim - White Mountain

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Michelle is still stopped at the top of Topkok and has been there 2 hours. Kind of an odd place to stop.

Pete and Aily still battling out on the ice almost to WM. Pete at 9.4mph and Aily at 9.2. This is going to be close all the way to Nome.

Ray Reddington is almost to WM. Remember I said to watch him on the coast? He looks to have a solid hold on 7th place.

I think several mushers - Michelle, Jason, Richie - realised that their dogs needed to stop, so they did.

Jason's probably getting some peace and quiet out there - it was pretty busy in Elim when he arrived.

Michelle is stopped near where Ken Anderson hunkered down in a bad storm a few years back (we were all worried he was going to die, while he was snug in his sled, getting the best rest of the race). I think it's sheltered and out of the wind in the afternoon sunshine.

If Richie doesn't move in the next hour, then I will be worried about him. So far, he's been resting for 3.5 hours after returning to Elim after going through about 3 miles.

I remembered that Anderson stopping place and am hoping that is where she is. He said it was a beautiful protected grove of trees.

Still I'm worried about Jason. I know Elim is busy but I would think it would be a better place than on the ice. At least Richie turned around and went back. I'm worried his team quit and they won't get up to go back. I hate odd random stops at this stage of the race. We have seen too many teams quit over the years.
