Koyuk - Elim - White Mountain

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Jessie in WM last night:

I left Koyuk a half-hour behind him [Wade] and I guess I made 20 minutes on him, because I only came into Elim 10 minutes behind him. But I knew he wasn't going to go through - he said he doesn't have the leaders to go through.

I had wanted to stay a little longer in Koyuk, but got antsy and "sort of" left in under four <laughs> [remember she said if she stayed 4-4.5, she could do the run in one go... rather than only resting 3.5 hours?], so we just did a 13 hour run on less than 4 hours rest <laughs with disbelief> - they did good! I thought we got to Elim pretty good, but it was slow getting to here.

Half the problem was is I fall asleep and then we go slower. And then that ice coming in - it's actually a really hard, fast trail coming across Golovin Bay - but I was really slowing them down because I was worried about wrist injuries on all that ice.

Q: ... and you're down to such a small amount of dogs <sarcasm>

<laughs> I know. I know... but hey, they made it this far...

Q: This is the first time I've seen you really sleepy on that long run. You looked like you were half asleep.

Yah... yah...I kind of have been. I haven't had much sleep for a while. I actually didn't do too bad though. I was falling asleep more coming in to Shak and Koyuk. I did pretty good coming into Koyuk and Elim... ah, it wasn't too bad coming in to here.

Ralph is "out" of Elim... now to see if Jason (sitting out on the ice) bolts ahead of him.

(Oh - and Ryan Red. is just behind him, having gone straight through).

Ralph and Ryan passed Jason by and he stayed stopped - good man. Don't lose your head.

I think Ryan is going to pass Ralph though - they are very close and their trackers aren't in sync.

I *think* Pete just passed Aliy. He's up to 9 mph, while Aliy's at 8 mph and they are neck and neck going over Golovin Bay.

It looks like it but it is so hard to tell when one tracker has updated 3 minutes ago (Pete) and the other 5 minutes ago (Aily)

Kat Keith, with John right behind her out of Elim. Sad race for them.

I'm wondering why Jason is sitting on the ice outside Elim. Does he need to turn around and go back?

Interesting, Katherine Keith came into Elim ahead of John (by 9 minutes) and they both have gone through. She is a little bit ahead of him approaching Jason's spot on the ice.
