Koyuk - Elim - White Mountain

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

It's been almost 25 minutes since Ray got there so it looks like he is staying.

Aily 2 miles out

Watching the vids this morning - I had to laugh at the one of Dallas coming into WM...

The checker says "13:35...", they discuss the time, they check his mandatory gear, Dallas mentions "...and here's my 20 lb of dog food and 3 cans of heet that no-one ever checks...", signs the book, and then - oh so casual - "what time did my dad get in here?". Checker misunderstands and says "13:35...". Dallas, still oh-so-casual-and-patient tries to peer at the clip board and finally gets his answer.

You *know* that he'd been wondering about Mitch's time since Elim. Points to him for not grinding his teeth. :)

Mitch, Dallas, and Nic's teams all look amazing coming in. Nic's are still loping along at ridiculous speed.

I've got to step away from the computer for a couple of hours if anyone else wants to pick this up.

And I'm marvelling at how coherent Jessie is in Koyuk - talking about how long to stay there.

She says that if she leaves after 3.5 hours, the dogs are still sleepy and kind of groggy - and although they'll go, they don't tend to be particularly fast. She says if she stays 4-4.5 hours, it'll make all the difference - and that she can then blow through Elim and go the 12 hours to WM in one go.

She said that she's been carrying a cooler full of dog food the entire time, with 16 dogs the weight makes no difference - so she can feed on the trail easily.

Interestingly, she still ended up only staying 3.5 hours, leaving half an hour behind Wade (so hard to watch other mushers leave). And she still ended up blowing through Elim anyway.

That interview was really a pleasure to watch. She has so much personality and it was so much more interesting than the usual musher interviews.

Still no stupid tracker update for Ray and Aliy.

Of that chase pack, Michelle still has a lot of speed - while Pete, 3 miles ahead of her is slower. If I were Pete, I'd be nervous of her.
