Nome finish line

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Hans Gatt - 3:16 pm - 9 dogs:

They got sick earlier in the race, unfortunately, and so they are a bit skinny - not like how I usually have them at the finish. But they look good and they're healthy now. It was a tough race - incredibly tired. Obviously I had a sick dog team to look after and you just don't get any sleep.

Ralph Johannessen - 3:41 pm - 9 Dogs:

<dogs in blue coats, with orangey-red booties - moving very very smoothly and regimentedly. Ralph has a BIG orangey-red sled (compared to the finishing sleds of some of the earlier front runners>
Little windy and cold. On the way to Huslia it was very cold and there was loose trail. ... the dogs do their best, and I do my best. Could not be better this year.

Elsie tee - thank you so very, very much for providing these transcriptions - really brings the race a little closer to us "outsiders."
Appreciate the time and effort you put in.

OK... I'm glad. I didn't know if there was anyone still here that was reading them. :)

17th - Ken Anderson - 5:13 pm - 9 dogs:

<dressed in what looks like just a hoodie and a down vest? - compared to Jeff earlier in his sleeping bag>
<seems kind of down, but could just be tired>

I came here to place higher, I had a lot of little issues, and the competition is real steep. ...It is what it is. I'm happy at this point to even be in the top 20, because I was in the upper-20/low-30s for a long time and it wasn't looking good. But I just stuck with the schedule that I got wedged into, and it played itself out and worked out in the end, and I squeezed into the top 20.

I really didn't want to finish... — I'm probably not going to race any more, and I've been in the top-20 every time, other than my rookie year when I was 26th — ...and I really didn't want to finish out of the top-20 as my last race, so I'm glad that that happened.

I want to move on to other things. I have three kids and a wife that has a busy career, and it's a huge commitment to do this - time, emotionally, and financially. We're just juggling so many balls, so it's time to move on for now.

I was just having a minor panic attack - clicked on Jason and he was going 2.3 mph... NOOOOOOoooooooooo!

But he's back up to 6.3 mph. Not super speedy, but should keep him ahead of Robert for the last five miles... I hope?

The bicycle guy just showed up! Where did he start? somewhere ridiculous ago? Dwayne was talking about him.

(I wondered why the people in the chute were holding up their banner so early for Jason).
