I did not know that about Ketil. I do know that in 1974, the first woman to run the Iditarod, Mary Shields, did in fact, mush her team home, somewher near Nenana, I think. I think she finished 22nd. I wonder how many teams have gotten home this way?

Not many these days. It's the iditarod once more going back to Nenana.

Last year I read an interview with Ketil and his son, they were going to have an adventure, mushing back to Kaktovik. Don't know if it worked out.

In 1974 Mary Shields was the first ever woman to finish the Iditarod, finishing in 23rd place in 28 days, 18 hours and 56 minutes -- 29 minutes ahead of the second ever woman to finish the Iditarod, Lolly Medley, who took 28 days, 19 hours and 25 minutes. They travelled together for much of the time, then raced each other to the finish.

Mary did mush back home (near Fairbanks) with her team. She said mushing home from Nome was more hazardous since warmer weather had melted some of the ice and snow.

Mary's book, "Sled Dog Trails", is a good and fun read.

Ed stielstra and his crew have a long long drive hom, about a week i think back to the UP michigan.

They fly to anch then load up and drive, its always fun to follow their journey home on facebook, they make it fun and are often the last ones to arrive home to their kennels with the dogs.

Ketil is mushing to KOTZ to do the Kobuk 440 then mush home I believe. His son Martin followed him on Iditarod on a snowmachine with a loaded skid and pulled Dwayne Beals on another sled.
