Posted: Mon Feb 12, 2018 5:44 pmI'm curious if Paige is just being really conservative with her dogs, or whether there's something specific that she's seeing (like her mentioned during her run into Clinton Creek). According to her handlers, she opted to rest a little longer in Pelly in order to get another meal in them before leaving. Are they losing too much weight in the cold?
Laura is down to 9 dogs and I have to wonder if her smaller team is paying off for her - she seems to be flying every time I look. She's also on a slightly different run/rest schedule than the others, so it's hard to tell.

Hall was the first to leave Pelly Crossing...at 3:02 p.m.... Drobny took off at 4:39 p.m., she admitted it would be tough for her team to make a run at second place.
“I don’t have a dog team that can do that,” she said. “So I’m rooting for him at this point.”

Looking at her tracker, she:
It looks like she went forwards, then backtracked half a mile or so - I'm guessing walking in front of the team, judging by the speed - to that little spit of land she's sitting on (maybe to make a fire off the ice?) I hope she has enough dog food - she's a full 50 miles from Braeburn.
Tim Pappas is about 13 miles away, so will come past in a couple of hours, hopefully then her dogs will follow?
If not, I'd hazard to guess her race is done :*(

- ran 6.5 hours
- rested 4 hours
- ran 6 hours
- rested 4 hours
- tried to get them moving for about 1.5 hours
- rested for 6 hours
- tried again to get them moving for an hour
- and has now been stalled for about an hour.

*UPDATE* The crew just reached out to give me the scoop. As Matt came in Jess said, "He looks like he just had the most relaxing run of his life!" Matt is loving the temps, the trails and the dogs. The team rolled in strong and were wagging tails and rolling around. The team was looked over by the vets for their mandatory last CP vet check and had no problems. The team is maintaining their hearty appetite and have been snacking a lot on the trail. Matt's happy, cracking jokes and having a good time. Who knew Matt would have jokes left in him have 900 miles?! He's a funny guy!
Here are some pics of Matt coming into Braeburn--The dogs really look great. They're alert, with tight tugs and ready to go. Easy peasy crew, let's take a nice long nap first.
Matt removed the dogs booties on this run because of the warm temps and the fact that dogs regulate their temperature through their paws and mouths. He's trying to keep them nice and cool. A couple of dogs still remained bootied, like Hamlet, because of their feet tendencies either to splits or snowballs.
Did you get a look at Anchor? Man, that dude is a goofball. He seems to be enjoying himself very much at single lead. His sister Ace and father Koyuk are right behind him for support.
