Loose Iditarod dog recovered after Anchorage ceremonial start
A dog from an Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race musher's team has been recovered, after getting loose just before Saturday's ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage.
Handlers with Norwegian musher Lars Monsen say a woman reported finding the dog, Hudson, on Saturday afternoon.
Hudson bolted from a kennel truck near 4th Avenue and F Street at about 7 a.m. as Monsen – wearing bib number 61 – prepared for Saturday’s ceremonial start of The Last Great Race.
Hudson isn’t the first Iditarod dog to be reported missing in Anchorage. Last year Groovey, a 3-year-old dog dropped from musher John Baker’s team on the trail and flown back to Anchorage, escaped its handler and subsequently died after being hit by a car near Northern Lights Boulevard and Bragaw Street.
A similar story last summer had a brighter outcome after Scruggs, a dog adopted from Aliy Zirkle’s team, was startled by a lawnmower and ran away near Campbell Airstrip Road. After days of searching, Scruggs was found safe hiding under a porch in the Bear Valley area.
