Ops king jeff! He was up in the front group for most the half way.

Was hoping him and lindwood would be up there with the young guns.

I am really rooting for Petit. Anyone who sleeps with his dogs is alright with me. Actually I see a lot of the Susan Butcher mentality. Go Nic!

This was video I saw a couple of days ago - from back in Iditarod - but I only got the chance to listen to it. But it really fun, so I went back and dug it out and transcribed. Be nice if they could get more videos like this.

Aliy and Jessie are hanging out in the sun, with their teams curled up in the straw behind them:

J: ...That's the thing, if you can keep your speed, you'll catch people.

A: If you *have* speed.

J: <agreeing> If you *have* speed.

A: If you don't have speed, you can't keep your speed. <laughs>

J: <laughs> that's true... Once you lose it, it's pretty much gone.

A: YOu know, I thought that too, but I didn't have any speed back here...I think I was sleeping and the dogs were sleeping... well, not really, but... and Pete and Ritchie passed me like a bottle rocket, and my dogs were embarrassed, I think, so they started going faster <laughing>. You *always* pass me. Always.

J: Yeah, well, we only averaged 8 mph coming over here...

A: "Only 8" <scoffs>...

J: I was pretty happy with that, until everyone else was an hour or so faster, so they've got to be going 9-10.

A: YOu know, it's ebb and flow. I really think it is. Pete passed me, ...

<video cuts and restarts with Wade wandering over and taking a seat with them on their drop bags>

A: <poking at his leg> Have you got a garbage bag on? Wow

W: No, ... snow pants...

A: That's that new stuff... do you sweat a lot in it?

W: Not too bad... not any worse than anything else... I don't get wet.

A: So you stayed in Ophir?

W:Yuh

A: ... and you're staying here... <makes a scheming motion with her fingers> Hmmmm.... Interesting... So we heard a story from Joe Cameraman <looks over at camera> that there was a pretty good ground blizzard. Jeff and Larry Daugherty were stuck in it and they were crawling.

J: WHen I got here, Larry was the only team here and he said that he was in a horrible blizzard, the worst he's ever bin in, really strong winds. He went to the shelter cabin back ten miles or so from here. He stayed there, and it took him five hours to get from that shelter cabin to here ...what is it? 12-15 miles?

W: Wow

J: he said he was actually snow-shoeing in front of his team. I was like "You were *snowshoeing* in front of your team?? Does anybody do that any more??"

W: THat's awesome.

J: yeah, he said he was snowshoeing in front of his dogs...

W: Weird

J: you could see where teams had been going all over the place.

W: yuh, I've seen some interesting looking tracks, ...

J: Yeah, I was pretty happy I wasn't the lead team, that's for sure.

A: I think you were smart, Wade, not being...

W: Well, I think there's going to be some weather on the coast, so <inaudible>... I want to get there with a strong team.

J: <agreeding> Yeah...

W: So I don't want to push through something like that.

A: So where are Ray and...

J: I expected Ray to be here because he passed me. He must be just down the trail. I heard some dogs barking out there, so ...

A: Pete's out there, a little ways, ...

J: They've got to be camping... There's another creek crossing, not too far. SO I'd imagine they thought this would be crowded and went there and camped.

[they were indeed camped just out of ID]

A: When they got here, Jeff and Larry and that lot were still here.

J: I think Jeff and Nic were here when Ray went through, so he probly just said "to heck with it" and went through.

I have some more coming - I listened to them on my commute and will try and find the time sometime during the day to transcribe.

Coming up:

  • Wade on strategy
  • Aliy on dropped dogs
  • Pete's team in Unk
  • Matt Failor's Hell Hound
