Norwegian races, Finnmarksløpet

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

I just checked out the site for the first time. This looks like a fantastic place to visit/watch the race.

I looked at last years race, the winner used 2 days (1 day, 23 hours and 17 minutes) from Varangerbotn to Alta. Dallas and the other are on their way to Varangerbotn now.

This year, the trail is 15 km (9 miles) shorter from Varangerbotn to Alta, one checkpoint less (last year they went Varangerbotn - Sirbma - Levajok, now they are going straight from Varangerbotn to Levajok, 125 km/77 miles). The dogs have run 200 km (125 miles) longer. So not quite sure.. I'm guessing wildly at late Friday/early Saturday (Norwegian time).

Regarding CET (Central European Time, which we use in Norway) we haven't switched to DST yet (that is last Sunday in March). The time offset is 5 hours to east coast time...)

From Finnmarksløpet's FB page: "One of the front runners, Thomas Wærner, has scratched due to health issues in his team" :(
His dogs has got diarrhea and don't eat well...

Oh *****.. that was a shame. Much disease this year, on mushers (both here and iditarod) and now dogs too.

Drat. I wondered why he had been lagging. This is bad news.

Oh wow, I'm very sorry to hear about Thomas Waerner. He was neck and neck with Dallas for much of the race. :(
According to the GPS, Petter Karlsson (Sweden) is currently in first, Dallas second.
