Femundsløpet is going on now. I know someone asked me (in chat I think) of what Sørlie was doing.. seems I was tricked by last year. Anyway, he just won Femundsløpet 600 (km). Lars Monsen will probably be number three, Bjørnar Andersen scratched. I think that is all the mushers who has been in America.

When does the Finnmarksløpet start?

And where does it go? Is it a point-to-point or a loop or an out-n-back?

Finnmarksløpet will start March 9th at 7.00 pm. The race is re-routed this year and will be about 1200 km, but start and finish will still be in Alta :-) Here is a map.

Time to bump this a bit.

Finnmarksløpet (FL-1200, the longest) starts this evening (norwegian time). Alphashe posted the map. It's quite familiar but there are some things different than for instance Iditarod.

There are two mandatory rests, one in 16 hours, must be taken after Kautokeino (first cp) and latest at Varangerbotn (ninth checkpoint), the start difference is added to this rest (just as Iditarod). Start and finish is both in Alta, it's 11 checkpoints.
The other mandatory rest is 10 hours which can be splitted between Levajok II and Karasjok, but at least 2(**) hours must be taken in Karasjok where it is also mandatory vet check (** I corrected this after Alphashe proofreading ;) )

http://www.finnmarkslopet.no/home-trail-description/

On Jotka and Øvre Pasvik there are no handlers, on the other checkpoints the handlers are present, dropped dogs are handled by the handler teams. It's only the musher who are allowed to care for the dogs, the handlers are just allowed to bring bags to right area. The handlers can care for the musher, talking strategy, cooking, make sleeping arrangements, wake up++

Alphashe, please correct me if I said something wrong.

...and of course, GPS tracker:

Someone asked me of Dallas chances, I would say they are pretty good. I would not be surprised if he wins, but it's 1200 km to be mushed first. The first part is changed this year, making the trail longer and those who have done it before must adjust they plans.
