Another UK Fan at Iditarod 2018 - UK to AK

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Iditabuds! Thanks so much for all the encouragement! :) :)

I'll be posting here from now.

Current status is . . . . . the hardy pot luck butterflies have escaped and settled in my brainwaves . . . .. Lots of lists and last minute stuff going on now, all accompanied by the flutterings of excitement :)

Monday night I arrive in Anchorage for a pre-race week packed with events and volunteer training.

This morning I received a greetings card from a dear friend in California with some words about the humming bird which seem to apply neatly to the dogs too:

'Legends say that humming birds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. The humming bird's delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life's sweetest creation.'

Looking forward to laughing with the dogs - the Iditarod dogs!

ooooooo dancing bananas - love it!

Arrived a few hours ago and sat down for a light bite to eat. I could see the twinkling lights over the bay. The food arrived five minutes later and the bay was hidden. The snow had come in so fast and so thick .....

It was snowing when I left Newcastle. Now my husband is digging out the car from five inches of snow arrived from Russia overnight. He's starting his Tuesday as I'm finishing my Monday.

It's really dreamy being here - or maybe it's the jet lag. There are icicles hanging from the hotel roof that seem at least two feet long. I asked if they were decorations and reeled when told they are real. The lovely staff here smiled indulgently.

The shuttle from the airport has magnificent iditarod dogs leaping from it - the art work I mean - and the word 'Iditarod' is everywhere - spoken, on the lips of everyone around the lobby and in the shuttle bus, and written - in menus, in adverts, in mile high letters in banners.

Looking forward to tomorrow - but for now must try and sleep.

Dancing bananas!

You're there! Whoot, whoot! Now the fun begins. Don't hold back. Remember, you're there for all of us! See it, breathe it, touch it, smell it, eat it, live it. Do it all! BE ONE WITH THE IDITAROD! And I love your friend's message about the hummingbirds.
