Nikolai - McGrath - Takotna - Ophir - Iditarod

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Just running the numbers very roughly, I think Joar is still in 3rd, since everyone still to arrive still has to rest for 3 hours or so... And as my husband said, it's still only half-way.

So how long will Mitch and Nicolas stay in Iditarod? Will they leave together?

I was scrambling all day to get my work done before leaving for a Convention on the other side of the Sierra today, so couldn't look at the videos let alone transcribe them (I'm finally in my hotel room after midnight, about to watch), but the one I did get to listen to was Mitch in ID and he seemed quite put out that Nic claimed to have rested so little, yet his dogs were doing so good. He didn't seem to think that was sustainable. And next time I glanced up, there was Nic going down the trail. Hah

I just looked at that video, Mitch looks really puzzled. But now Nicolas is breaking trail, but he still has some speed. I kind of agree with Mitch, it's hard to see how Nicolas can put up with this pace.

Joar left two hours after Mitch, 2.5 hours after Nicolas.

I rellay wished we could have weather as map overlays on the tracker, with predictions for wind, temperature and precipitation and radar (and satellites) images to see how it went. That would have been nice.

It's predicted to be 8-9 m/s (that's fresh breeze) from almost directly north in the Iditarod-Shageluk area this night and some snow.

Those were a fascinating bunch of videos - so many ways to skin a cat. People wanting to bank more rest, others taking less. And it sounds like the trail was a whole mixed bag too, with some zipping along, while poor Larry ended up snow-shoeing in front of his team for the last hour when they couldn't see the trail in an awful ground blizzard.

Lots of speedy teams in the top ten bunch.

One more quickie before sleep - Joar mentioned that his best dog currently is "The Russian" (what's that in Norwegian Mira?) comes from Mikhail Telpin's dog breeding one of Joar's dogs. The dog is a quarter ... what were Telpins dogs? Chukchi ...that's not right. But those big solid dogs.

Joar said he was hauling a$$ and is a cut above the whole of the rest of his team
