Nikolai - McGrath - Takotna - Ophir - Iditarod

Postby elsietee » Tue Mar 06, 2018 4:01 pm

Trail is reported to be slow into McGrath.

Looks like Aaron's intending to 24 in McGrath and is making a move. He rested 3 hours about half way between Rohn and Nik; ran 4 hours to Nikolai; rested for 40 mins; and is now on the 54 mile <per Wade> leg to McGrath, and leapfrogged from 8th up to 5th place in that move.

<btw, Aliy and Jessie both camped together at Tin Creek on the way over from Rohn - they were on the east side of the trail, with Ray, Ryan and Mitch on the west side>

Wouldn't you love to be camped there with them?!

"Softly, softly, catchee monkee"

Jessie and Aliy are only 15 miles behind Mitch - not even two hours by trail - and they're only 290-275 miles into the 1000 miles.

It looks like breaking trail into Nik took it's toll on several teams. Mitch, Ryan, Nic, Ray, Aliy, Ritchie, Pete, and Hugh all dropped a dog there. Ryan is down to 12.

Speaking of - thrilled to see both Redington's up there - how cool for them and their family.

Martin in Nik:

Sprinkling the ashes of Art jr. - one of the judges on ID. Good friend, good dog man, good Alaskan.

Says at this very spot a few years ago, a lone dog came trotting down the trail. Everyone was in uproar, and Art said "settle down" and went and got the dog. Then everyone was all "what are you going to do?!?" And Art said "I bet the next musher will be happy to see that dog". And sure enough, a few minutes later, Warren Palfrey came mushing in "you guys seen a dog?". Of course, he's here. No fuss, no muss.

Volunteered, ran the race, was a race judge, a neighbour of Martin's, ...He's saving some ashes for White Mountain, another of his favorite spots.

Matt Hall:

[Rainy Pass] was the most fun I've had on a sled in years. It was technical, it wasn't just like the steps where you can hold your breath and it's over. It was a half hour straight of "alright! here we go!". Last run into here was pretty slow, but I had a blast. I wish the whole race was like that. There were even a couple of spots where I was kind of nervous - some of those drops. I wouldn't want to be Team #60 down it, that's for sure.

Bruce Lee says "someone" (wasn't going to say who) is planning on going on to ID to do their 24. Heister says they were lucky to get in to Tak before the weather dropped in.

In Takotna (mile 329):
Mitch Seavey
Ray Redington jr

On trail between McGrath and Takotna:
36 Jessie Royer 322 RUN
8 Linwood Fiedler 321 RUN
31 Aliy Zirkle 319 RUN
33 Joar Leifseth Ulsom 318 RUN
30 Peter Kaiser 313 RUN
29 Richie Diehl 313 RUN

McGrath is at 311.

What is really interesting is where they are going to do 24. With the snow and soft trails I doubt we will see anyone going very long for 24. But I looked at the weather forecast and it seems it will be more snow..

Travis Beals is taking his 24 in Nikolai, he has been there for almost 24 hours.
The others isn't really easy to say anything about. Takotna is a popular place for 24h (as is Nikolai for the middle to back-packers).

Nicolas has rested 4 hours in McGrath..

I did some initially computations, I'm quite sure that some of these mushers have not started their 24h, but if they have, this are the leaving time:

#13 Mitch Seavey can leave at 07th. Mar at 23:35 from Takotna.
#17 Ray Redington jr can leave at 08th. Mar at 02:00 from Takotna.

#46 Nicolas Petit can leave at 07th. Mar at 21:21 from McGrath.
#64 Aaron Burmeister can leave at 07th. Mar at 21:47 from McGrath.
#11 Wade Marrs can leave at 07th. Mar at 22:56 from McGrath.
#7 Ryan Redington can leave at 07th. Mar at 23:16 from McGrath.

Jessie must rest 46 minutes less than Mitch, Joar and Aliy are traveling more or less together (Jessie is 3-4 miles in front of them), Joar and Aliy have only fire minutes in difference in resting time (25 hours and 10 minutes, 25 hours and 14 minutes).

More 24 hour rest calculation.

#64 Aaron Burmeister can leave at 07th. Mar at 21:47 from McGrath.

It's 2.5 hours between McGrath and Takotna, so Nicolas is less than half an hour behind Mitch?

#13 Mitch Seavey can leave at 07th. Mar at 23:35 from Takotna.
#17 Ray Redington jr can leave at 08th. Mar at 02:00 from Takotna.
#36 Jessie Royer can leave at 08th. Mar at 02:16 from Takotna.
#31 Aliy Zirkle can leave at 08th. Mar at 03:00 from Takotna.
#8 Linwood Fiedler can leave at 08th. Mar at 03:18 from Takotna.
#29 Richie Diehl can leave at 08th. Mar at 03:40 from Takotna.
#30 Peter Kaiser can leave at 08th. Mar at 03:41 from Takotna.
