UNK TO SHAK to Koyuk

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Dogs look good - trotting along. Wearing warm coats. Leaning into their harnesses. They stayed lined out and were ready to go again.

Bruce Lee says he went out on the ice on a snowmachine with Robert Sorlie, and Robert yelled to Joar in Norwegian "Welcome to Koyuk in first place!" and Joar yelled "No f**king way!?" :))

They have some close up video that I'll keep an eye out for when they post it.

Here's my screen snap. I wished I could capture the video of how well they were moving and pulling.

Nic is about 4-5 miles out still. It looks like they have to climb some small hills, since both he and Joar slowed way down. Nic is currently at 5 mph.

Ehrm.. "nå koker det" literally meaning "now it's boiling" or "it's getting hot".

"Ulsom ligger i teten etter at lederen kjørte feil" means "Ulsom are in the lead after the leader took a wrong turn".

That was really funny... and very weird, I think it should have managed it better. I do remember several years back when someone tried to follow Femundsløpet and google translatet Bjørnar Andersen into "Bear duck tail"

Anyhow, be aware that until they (if they do) adjust the trail on the tracker into Koyuk, the GPS readings are wrong. Right now, it says that Nic is 7 miles from Koyuk, he is probably more like 2-3 miles. I guess it is because they do a snap-to-grid (or snap-to-trail), meaning that they take the position to the musher, try to snap it to the trail and then use that mileage. Since the trail is off, it is wrong.

...and still not much movement in Shaktoolik. I guess it's daylight for 7 more hours or so? So if it calm down, we will have lots of teams crossing during night. I remember some years ago when Lance Mackey where hold up in shaktoolik and when he eventually started to cross he got a long tail of other mushers trailing him. I think they were placed 20-30-ish. Perhaps this will give Aliy and Jessie a change to climb on the list?

Ramey just left Shaktoolik, and Wade and Ray some time ago.
