UNK TO SHAK to Koyuk

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Great.

Regarding day versus night, it is almost spring equinox so it's 12 hours everywhere. Where I live it's light 6-6.. It depends on how far north you are..

There was an offshore wind a few weeks ago and it blew the sea ice out to sea. So the Norton Sound trail is inland - maybe an hour - 5 miles - longer than normal.

Joar leaving Unk (after 1:45 rest):

I'm feeling good. The dogs are feeling good.

Q: Did you get something to eat? How 'bout those sourdough pancakes?

J: Awesome. I've been trying to make them at home, but haven't quite got them good. Can you bring me a starter [for them].

Q: I'll get them to mail you some...

J: My own sourdough starter...

Q: did you get anyone to step up in lead yet?

J: Yeah, these guys. This is Ollie (?) who was on rookie of the year team last year <kisses dog on nose> ...

[He mentioned this dog back in ID - he bought the dog from Sebastien Vergnaud from France. He's super licky and waggy and affectionate ... and LOUD, if the leaving-ID-video is anything to go by]

...and this is my boy Russian.

<he's baby talking the dogs the whole time he's getting them ready>

<dogs are wagging to leave, tails up and trotting/loping cheerily>

Mitch leaving Unk (after 3:20 rest):

Complete silence.

"Allright"

Dogs leave, with a bit of "Gee gee" as they get off route.

Mitch and Joar is in Shaktoolik, Nicolas is resting on the land spit (is that the word?). The next group are getting closer to Shaktoolik.

I am falling madly in love with Joar! Always thought he was incredibly good looking, but absolutely love his way with his dogs!

Eek! Why are both Nic and Mitch stopped? I hope Nic is okay. It's scary not knowing. I have visions of him or the dogs being hurt, and now Mitch has stopped to help him.

Even Nic Petit needs to rest every now and then :-) Waiting out at at the shelter cabin north-bound seems to be a good idea. The rabbit & the turtle-ish. Even though I think the outcome here is the opposite :-)

Looks like Nic was resting at shelter cabin. Now Mitch is, and Nic just took off. GGGGOOOOOO Nic!

I guess they also want the first light, the trail to Koyuk isn't always obvious. It is quite normal to stop at that place.

It seems to me that Joar got the fastest team at the moment, but it is hard to tell. I really hope so! Anyway, they have made it an exciting race. It's happening stuff in the groups behind, I think top twenty is still very uncertain.

It's 90 miles from Unk to Koyuk, so they have to stop somewhere.

Both Nic and Mitch rested in Unk,so have gone 55 miles.

Joar's last proper rest was before Unk, so he has to stop in Shak (which was his plan). ... he just left Shak after three hours, which I was thinking was short, but he's given them 1:45 in Unk too.

Nic just started moving again.

Agreed. I can't even begin to sort out who's where back there - they are all so close together.

I'm curious about Jessie who has slowed way down, or is she banking rest for her customary big push up the coast?
