UNK TO SHAK to Koyuk

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Ah, I didn't realize there was a shelter there. That makes sense. And now Nic is moving again. GO Nic!!!

Re-running the GPS it looks like Nic rested 3.5 hours on the spit.

Another dumb question: It appears that Nic is off trail a bit. Do you know if there is some variation between what is shown on the GPS and the actual trail?

Jessie says this isn't her year. Tough to see.

It is very common that the first mushers mushing to Koyuk is off trail and then they adjust it to where the trail actually is. At least one time they crossed north and went inland east to Koyuk (same way as outbound), sometimes it's almost only land. It varies from year to year.

Looks like you’re right. Replay the tracker. He went to the shore, then backtracked out on the ice

With the tracker playback it looks like he was off of the trail for 1 hour and 42 minutes. Assuming that Joar is on the right trail Nick is now back following the same path Joar took

I was going to say they routed the trail inland to avoid the open water - and said this year's trail would be about five miles longer.

Well, it looks like Nic missed a marker and ended up all the way on the shore - had to backtrack to find the new trail - and in the process, Joar slipped past. <gulp>

I estimate Nic maybe went four miles off trail, including the out and back?

That is a major bummer for Nic, and really good news for Joar.

Translation: Joar is now in first place after Nic drove wrong and had to drive back. Think he lost over an hour. Hey joar
