UNK TO SHAK to Koyuk

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

From Wade’s kennel’s FB:

SJK Iditarod Update: Day 8

A brutal run to Koyuk would be an understatement! Word from the trail was that conditions at times were completely white-out. According to Iditarod GPS tracker, Wade and his buddy Travis lost trail for a moment, got turned around, back tracked, and then had to turn around once more to go in the right direction.

Turning a team around in near blind conditions is mentally taxing for everyone, even those best tried and true leaders are tested. The dogs focus goes completely off kilter-and they can feel your frustrations. Bringing their confidence back is crucial, but not easy...especially when you can't see them! It was apparent the rest of the run proved to be difficult for the team, but watching the rest of the pack proved that he is not alone in having some difficulty.
