WM - Safety - Nome

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Joar leaving WM:

I am one happy guy - leaving here in a good position - that's for sure. And I'm just amazed with my dog team - they really put on a show here. And I'm very very proud of them, that's for sure.

Seeing how the dogs have just been building up. I've been nervous at points that I wouldn't even finish the race. We've been going through so much slow stuff. And then they just kick it into gear after Koyuk there and just hauling... and they cheered me up because everyone started barking at each other and it was a lot of fun.

That's terrific!

Over the past 3 years, Joar's times from WM to Nome were:
2017: 9 hr. 43 m
2016: 9 hr. 14 m
2015: 9 hr. 40 m
Add 1 to 3 min. in Safety on top.
I'm hoping for the 9 hr. 14-17 m range: ) - which gets him in around 1:10? I figure he might want to beat that time, so 1:05 :)
But he probably doesn't give a fig about a personal WM to Nome record. There are bigger fish to fry.

Little clip: Joar & Co. off to Nome!!! #ROARFORJOAR

I see Pete on the live cam - his team look lively! They were jumping in their harnesses trying to leave the check in and then the runners had to run fast to stay ahead of them to park them. Then they stood, tails wagging. He has 8 left and they look good.

He's bedding them on straw now, next to Ray, who's next to Mitch, who's next to Nic. And next to them is an empty pile of straw. :)

WM - I just realised that the two piles of straw closest to the camera on the path up to the buildings are Joar's two dropped dogs. I presume there's a line along there, and with each dropped dog, more straw piles will appear.

They have a nice view of the rest of the dog yard, so can keep an eye on anything exciting happening - and also hopefully anyone who walks past will notice if anything's amiss.

Going for that Fastest Safety to Nome award and proving his dogs have still got it?

Or practising for future battles with Dallas?

:)

Congratulations to both - excellent race!
