WM - Safety - Nome

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

it takes the pressure off, eh? Knowing that he's there to pick up the slack?

Unfortunately, he can only report until 6 pm AK, and that deadline is fast approaching - with Mike Williams still 10 miles out. I'm afeared that that might be it for Kale's reporting for this year. What a guy! Each time he did his livecast, his eyes got a little bit smaller from lack of sleep.

He said they waited up for Hugh early this morning - and finally had to call it quits around 5-6 am when Hugh decided to stay a little longer in Safety.

Hugh stayed for almost an hour at safety, I had tried to figure out when he should reach Nome and got baffled.

Just watched Martin arrive, a good crowd and nice looking dogs.

Edited. I looked at Martin arrival video on Insider ..."they were <didn't catch the word> slow.. I felt like I was running siberians again"

Tom Knolmayer arrived in Nome, greeted by what i guess is his two daughters (10 and 12 according to his biograpy).

Somehow.. i was really touched when I watched. It really looked like they had missed him. One of them (the youngest I think) got his bib and stood on the runner together with dad when they went off. It was 3:30 am.

Northern Whites Kennel - Jim Lanier shared Anna Bondarenko's post. 1 hr ·
Situation is very serious. I was watching Jim sitting in a blow hole since 3:30am. He left wt. mountain feeling sick. If you know Jim, you know he is tough and does not complain about anything. If he says he needs help it means he is really in deep trouble. Scott Jansen is with him and he made a call. Search and rescue is on their way from Nome. It will take a while for them to reach Jim. They refused to take me with them. At this time I can only pray they get to Jim in time to get him medical assistance he desperately needs.

Anna Bondarenko 15 mins ·

Jim and Scott are safe and sound. Thank you all!

Oh no! I hadn't noticed them stuck, other than noting that a couple of mushers paused right where the overland trail meets the shore (which I believe is the "blow hole"?).

Most recently Misha Wiljes has been there for 30 minutes. *

I don't see either Jim or Scott on the GPS tracker, now, so assume that means that both are scratched?

*Edited to add - Peter Fleck just passed her, so I assume no trouble.

Hope the folks coming along don't hit a blow hole. Not sure if Misha has - she's a few miles back.
ITC hasn't put up a press release yet, but pretty sure they've scratched.

Janssen - he sure keeps getting waylaid on the trail.

I've been watching Misha too.. I hoped they will start when they were passed.. but I guess they just need some rest then

I wondered about Lanier... I couldn't remember which mushers I missed but I thought there should have been some more on the tracker. Good to hear they are safe!

I wish they'd left the tracker up, so we could see his track.

Heartbreaking to get so close and then have everything go awry at the very end. But I bet both are super-pleased with their dogs.
Good job all.

In 2014 (?) Jeff's tracker was working when he got in trouble in the blow hole. Aliy passed him without seeing him. That was the reason she was so worried about Jeff, she thought he would have already been in Safety.

So being passed by another tracker doesn't mean the musher saw the first team.

Has Misha's tracker moved yet?
