WM - Safety - Nome

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

I was wrong (imagine that  ) we do have Norwegian bookends!
Got here just in time to see them in chute.
Luckily had checked chat room and mira was there who told me to look at Nome cam. Fortunately it was up and I just had to refresh it and perfect timing, there was a team in the chute.

Sure do miss Kale's streaming.

Or is that WM to Nome?

It is from Safety (if it still exists) and that award could have been delivered when he arrived. That time is really impressive, if it's not record it must be close.

My oldest daughter and I watched the three last team into Nome.

Nice interview with Pete after the finish, talking about the challenges and right at the end, interesting stuff about his leaders.

They are working on taking the arch down. Or should say, move it to the side.

ITC published three FB live interviews with Joar, Aliy, and Dee Dee - and they are great. Much less fluffy than the usual interviews and lots of great insights.

Go here:

Joar:
https://www.facebook.com/IditarodTrailC ... 027581929/
(there's a very quick part where they start to interview him, but lose their "live" connection, so restart it to the above longer interview:
https://www.facebook.com/IditarodTrailC ... 484249150/)

Aliy:
https://www.facebook.com/IditarodTrailC ... 360849029/
(one of the more interesting comments (actually, there were tons, but...) was the part about how they guarded their dogs for the first six hours until drug testing was complete).

Dee Dee:

Oh - and searching for the URLs, I just found another one with Ray Redington (haven't listened yet):
https://www.facebook.com/IditarodTrailC ... 564244842/ )

and one from Nic:
https://www.facebook.com/IditarodTrailC ... 184360880/

and one from Mitch:

[deleted second URL - it was just the last part of the interview again]

ROTY Jessie Holmes:
WARNING - the sound doesn't start until 1:45 into the interview - it has taken me
all afternoon to figure that out.

Best quote from Joar:

"And two foxes ran across the trail in front of us and just sat there, looking at us.
... and the dogs went apesh*t."

(great story, esp, when I remember that night and remember how slowly he was progressing down the trail. A local had been talking to Ray who'd said "I can't catch the front guys" and the local said "but the trail over there is really snowy and slow" - and watching Joar's slow progress, you could see that).

Best Quote from Ray:

Q: how do you deal with those difficult decisions about when to leave a check point when you're sleep deprived?

Ray: It gets a lot easier the more teams arrive behind you.
