Yukon Quest Snippets and Links

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Some more great pics of Ryne, later followed by Rob leading Andrew, Deke (down to 7 dogs), and Jason over Eagle Summit in near white-out conditions:

https://www.facebook.com/pg/YukonQuest/ ... 7688729490
(the pics of Hans and Michelle are also in this album)

(and a great video of Allen going up in much better conditions:
https://www.facebook.com/YukonQuest/vid ... 238392302/).

Looks like Jason must have had a rough time of it, since he left 2:40 ahead of Andrew, who left 10 mins before Rob, who left two hours ahead of Deke.

They are finally all safe in 101.

Andrew's wife Kristin:
Our handlers finally made it [to 101] after the wind blew the windshield wipers off!

Brenda Naakgeboren:
Deke's handlers had to follow the plow truck up!

Misha has not been so lucky. She left at 7:20 this morning... and just arrived back there over 12 hours later. Her team kept stalling, by the looks of things, and, despite waiting at the foot of Eagle for about 3 hours, she finally turned around and went the 18 miles back to Central (the run to 101 is "only" 25 miles, so she got within 7 miles of her destination).

Poor Misha. She is having a rough go of it. I wonder if losing a team member didn't take a lot of her enthusiasm away. :( :( :( :(

I'm really pleased to see that Misha is mushing with the other 6 over Eagle! There is currently two parties, one party with seven musher going over Eagle and another party with five mushers tackling Rosebud. Way to go!

The group of 7 is currently on top of Eagle, the group consist of

Isabelle Travadon 9 783.0 mi
Remy Leduc 4 783.0 mi
Hendrik Stachnau 20 782.9 mi
Misha Wiljes 17 782.9 mi
Jim Lanier 13 782.8 mi
Chase Tingle 22 782.8 mi
Laura Allaway 24 782.8 mi

The Rosebud gang, Curt seems to be at the foot of Rosebud, the rest are about half way to the top. Mush on!

Rob Cooke 30 806.8 mi
Jason Biasetti 27 806.8 mi
Andrew Pace 19 806.8 mi
Deke Naaktgeboren 25 806.8 mi
Curt Perano 29 804.3 mi

Due to increasingly dangerous conditions coming into Fairbanks, including overflow and wind-blown snow, the Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race will be moving the finish line.

The finish line will be moved from its current location, the Morris Thompson Culture and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks, to Nordale Bridge.

To reach Nordale Bridge, drive 10 miles down Chena Hotsprings Road. Turn right on Nordale Road. Drive a couple miles down the road and the bridge will be visible.

This change has been made after the 13th team crossed the finish line in downtown Fairbanks.

If you watch the video of Ryne coming in, she's talking to Aliy and Allen and said the trail blew in and she couldn't see it - and with open water either side, she just pulled in next to someone's house (with 7.5 miles to go) and hunkered down for a while (giving her husband heart palpitations). Eventually a snowmachine came through - put in a trail - and off she went again.

She asked Allen if he ran into any overflow - and he laughed "nope".

Martin Reitan at the finish line:

He couldn't find the trail going up Rosebud and had to walk in front of the dogs to find it. Dogs quit on him going uphill in 50 mph winds, so they stopped, and, after a rest, they got going again. He said he'd come far enough that it didn't make sense to go back. He said he wasn't even wearing a parka - he was running around and sweaty. Dogs were sick and tired of the wind and didn't want to go any more, but his one dog - b/w dog - kept wagging his tail (and I think kept them going).

He said he slept too much at checkpoints - at Scroggie they woke him up three times and he doesn't remember it at all.

Brian at the finish:

"Yeah, it was really chill... except for Rosebud".

He said it was gnarly, but that's what he lives for.

"I did a lot of crawling... It was awesome - pretty gnarly. Two steps forwards, one step back"

"Worst part of the trail was the last 20 miles, with overflow and ice..."

Off topic question. I'm seeing, under our avatars, a symbol for PM, that's cool. Another one I see is AIM (I think that was it) what is that?

At a quick glance, I haven't seen what you're referring to, but if you hover your mouse over it, it should show you what it is (it does with "PM", which I've never even noticed before).
