Yukon Quest Snippets and Links

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Don’t know if this link will work - but it shows Brent getting ready to leave Dawson. I hadn’t realized he was wearing his helmet under all the layers until now. Yay.

Unclear what’s going on:

Hugh Neff:
Due to unforeseen circumstances my wife Olivia Shank Neff dream to honor her grandfather, LeRoy Shank, founder of the Yukon Quest, has been ruined. Our dogs don't deserve to be treated like this, or my wife. We'll be selling or rehoming most of our dogs. Please pray for us. We are devastated. Olivia doesn't deserve what they just put her through.

Olivia:

I love my dogs. I didn't want to scratch but was forced to. We could have done this race but were forced to drop out.

And then later:

...we're going to regroup and head for Tok. Run 2 small teams and honor our dog Boppy.

And:

...all I wanted to do was drop females in heat and continue on. They forced me to scratch after they forced me to drop my main leader. Mojito

A bit more on the situation from Hugh:

Olivia was forced to drop her main leader Mojito who is fine. She was then told she had to scratch after she was coming back to the doglot to drop a female who is in heat.
...
On her way back she was having issues because of the dog in heat. Just outside of Dawson her dogs got tangled.
...
A fight broke out which she eventually straightened out. YQ officials were within 20 feet of her when this happened and just watched.

Of course I can't say for sure - watching from the other side of the world, but I'm getting a hint of witch hunting here. But maybe it's just me.....
And yes - he is a little bit of a drama queen, but still.....

Oh, puleeze. Can we please retire the term "witch hunt"?
Especially for drama queen men?

Does anyone remember how Hugh "almost died" during the Iditarod 2014, and he and his gf blamed everyone else, whereas everyone else said it was his own fault?

Or that he is banned this season from all the big races: http://www.newsminer.com/sports/neff-ba ... 79f24.html and is now taking an anti-white pro Native stance, as well as feeling victimized, as usual ("He feels that he is being attacked, while race organizers and rule committees aren’t held equally accountable.")

This here may be (or may be not) a situation where someone's situation was misjudged by the organizers, but to be honest, the YQ people have come across as level-headed to me, so far.

The official note from the YQ is this: https://www.yukonquest.com/sites/defaul ... atches.pdf (Olivia Shank Neff is here listed as Olivia Webster).

Too much to catch up on..

Four mushers in Eagle, Paige has 10 miles to go to Eagle, and I really love how easy it is to be updated just be reading here and looking at trackleaders.
Great to have four teams so close this far in the race.

Aliy Zirkle wins the Yukon Quest 300

Postby Mushkraut » Fri Feb 08, 2019 4:32 am

I don't even know whether this belongs in this thread, but I would rather discuss positive events, such as Aliy Zirkle winning the Yukon Quest 200 (shortened 300).

I couldn't find any other mention via the forum search, so here's some info:

You may retire what ever you want. There is no "we" in this.
And last time I checked the musher in this story is a "she".

Yes! Usually it's TEAM GUY #1 and TEAM GUY #2 leapfrogging each other.

Great to see a woman maybe winning the race.
Although, as a shameless SPKennel fangurl I have to side with Allen, harhar.
