Yukon Quest Snippets and Links

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

My time is 12:52pm EST and I counted 15 teams camped out at mile 202.8 looks to be in the town/village of Pelly Crossing.
All my children have four feet and fur.

Looks like Brent ran about 5 miles past Scroggie and camped while Hans and Allen are stopped in Scroggie. And Lisbet needs to get moving if she doesn't want to get too far behind. I wonder if she has been having issues? She missed her starting time too.

Brent is further up the field than I thought he was, but working with a slightly less rest (but looking in detail, not as little as I thought at first glance).

Reading the trackers is hard, since they seem to have deleted many of the early time stamps, but guestimating:

Since their 12 hour layover in Carmacks - mile 136:

Hans:
Run: Carmacks to Pelly (64 miles) - 7:40 hours
5.5 hours rest at Pelly (mile 200);
Run: Pelly to Stepping Stone (37 miles): 4.5 hours?
4.5 hours rest at Stepping Stone (mile 237);
Run: Stepping Stone to Scroggie (mile 303) (66 miles) = 8 hours

Allen:
Run: 4 hour
3.5 hours rest at "somewhere before Pelly" (can't tell from tracker);
Run: "Somewhere" to Stepping Stone = 8 hours
5.5 hours rest at Stepping Stone
Run: Stepping Stone to Scroggie = 8+ hours

Brent:
Run: Camacks to McCabe = 4.5
3.5 hours rest at McCabe Creek (mile 175);
Run: McCabe to Stepping Stone: 7.5 hours
4.5 hours rest at Stepping Stone
Run: Stepping Stone to 5 miles past Scroggie: 8 hours

The trouble is, as soon as you read them, they're off again.

Brent rested 4:40 at 5 miles past Scroggie (mile 308)
Hans rested 5 at Scroggie
Allen rested 5 at Scroggie

Since Carmacks:

Michelle
Run: Carmacks to McCabe: 4.5 hours
Rest: 1.5 hours at McCabe
Run: McCabe to Pelly: 3 hours
Rest: 5 hours at Pelly
Run: Pelly to the hills after Stepping Stone (mile 263): 4 hours - long snack break of ~30 mins - 3.5 = 7.5 hours
Rest: 5 hour rest in Hills
Run: Hills > 5 hours - long 45 min snack break (maybe at Scroggie?) + 4 to King Solomon's Dome (mile 332)... and still going.

Paige

Her tracker is on the fritz so hard to read to start with, but it looks like:

Run: Carmacks to Pelly: 10 hours (can't really tell if she stopped for any significant breaks)
Rest: 4 hours at Pelly
Run: Pelly to the hills after Stepping Stone (mile 261): 7.5 hours
Rest: 6 hour rest in Hills
Run: Hills to 8 miles past Scroggie (mile 311): 6 hours
Rest: 8 miles past Scroggie - she's been there for 2+ hours now.

So Paige is banking a little more rest than Michelle (I think). Very similar times, though. She was 40 minutes slower into Braeburn than Michelle (I compare the two, since they rested in similar locations).

I suspect that the next few hours, as mushers go over the big hills and down into Dawson, it'll really show up who's strategy has paid off and who has the power to get up over those things.

I saw an interview with Ryne on FB (Braeburn? Carmacks?), where she said she wanted a little more power than she'd had up to that point. She started with 10 dogs, added one more at Carmacks, and two more at Pelly.

Leaving Pelly, most are back up to 13-14 dogs.

Olivia, Deke, and Remy have 12 (Olivia started with 9; Deke with 8, he added 2 at Carmacks; Remy with 12)
Chase and Lisbet have 11 (Chase started with 10, added 1 at Carmacks; Lisbet started with 12)
Jimmy has 10 (JImmy started with 8; added 3 at Carmacks)
and Jason Biasetti is down to 9 (Jason started with 8, added 2 at Carmacks)

Those are all rookies and I suspect suffer from an abundance of caution, so not taking the chance on any dogs becoming dead weight on the Pelly > Dawson trail.

Fellow Dawsonites Jason and Brian appear to be travelling together.

Hendrik with the greenland/malamutes seems to be doing great. I thought the dogs would be a little slower, but he's hanging nicely in there, mid-pack.

Here's Michelle trudging up King Solomon's Dome (Is that what it's called? Or is that the next one?)

The elevation numbers shown are in meters (what with it being Canada), but the climb goes from 650 m to 1,100 m - so ~1,450 ft.

She's now going along the top - dog were going 7.8 mph a minute ago, so apparently no worse for the climb and the 9 hour run. She's currently stopped on the little saddle between the peaks, maybe catching her breath and giving the dogs a Good Dog Snack. Hope it's pretty and still up there.

(If you look at https://www.windy.com/?62.792,-138.972,7 - it shows the wind and the temps - looks to be pretty quiet up there)

I guessed she'd drop down to the river a few miles further along and camp, but she's still up there, so maybe the conditions are pleasant enough in the saddle dip she's in to stay.

From Google satellite (which is surprisingly good), there's a clump of trees right there, so maybe that's where Michelle's camping out?

That clump of trees - nice catch! 8-)
She just caught up with Hans. Let's see how fast he starts moving around now.
