We decided to retire last spring and pull our Airstream Trailer to Alaska for 3 months.
It was incredible. After planning this trip for over 30 years, I was wondering if there would be a let down from all my expectations, but no, it was Spectacular.
The highlight was the Helicopter trip with Turning heads Kennel. Sarah Stokey picked us up at our RV Park and took us to the Seward airport. There you put on snow boots that fit over your shoes.
I wish I could remember the names of all the mushers and handlers that were helping us out. It’s about a 15 minute ride up to the glacier, you get to see all sorts of wildlife from the helicopter.
Once you land at the Temporary Glacier kennel there are more dogs than people! It’s such a small and informal group it was like hanging out with friends and family. There is a seat in front of the musher, and 2 places to stand behind the musher. Then there is a 2nd sled on a tow line. You eventually sit or stand in every position as you change spots each time you stop. The sled on the tow line is defiantly real mushing, as everyone of us fell off at least once, That’s when Braxton Peterson, who Lance considers as one of his sons, would say, “Now you’re a Musher.
We also got to hang out with Raymie Reddington and his wife Barbra at the Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla.
Raymie gives sled dog rides right out front of the Museum.
They were in between tour busses and had some time to share a few stories, we talked about Susan and her family, we had just visited their Kennel outside Fairbanks, Barbra told us the story when they were on the TV show Alaska State troopers.
Some one had stolen a few of Joe Sr’s old sleds…but the thieves put them on Craig’s list and were caught. I mentioned I was disappointed that Martin Buser’s Kennel was closed while we were in town and Barbra wrote down his phone number and said, call him, he would love to have you come by. I didn’t do it.
And we also got to see Hobo Jim in Homer. I’ll try to post that video on facebook.
