Yenta/Skwentna/Finger Lake

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Yenta/Skwentna/Finger Lake

Willow to Yentna Station ....................................................................................................42 miles
The trail begins on Willow Lake, travels across frozen lakes and swamps before the trail winds through a birch forest before dropping onto the Big Susitna River via Corral Hill. Most of the trail is flat. Once theteamsdropontotheBig SusitnaRivertheytravelviarivertotheYentnaStationCheckpoint, whichis located on the Yentna River.
Yentna Station to Skwentna................................................................................................30 miles
The mushers run the Yentna all the way to the confluence with the Skwentna River and the town of Skwentna, three miles from the mouth. These slow moving glacial rivers normally provide very good trails. They are all from one fourth to more than a mile wide and freeze thick enough to provide a good trail until late into the winter. Hazards are sometimes plentiful with rough ice to manhandle a sled over and around. Overflow, water running on top of the ice, can be a very real problem in some conditions.

I took the liberty to extend this one to Finger Lake.

As tangles posted in the morning thread, Nicolas is resting on trail, 17 miles before FL

Matt Hall is resting three miles out of Skwentna, been there for 2.5 hours now.

Matthew Failor stayed for 2 hours in Yentna, Wade Marrs stayed for 1, wonder why...

Nicolas, Linwood, Peter, Matt Hall, Aliy and Joar have all left Skwentna.

Suddenly, like a little parade, five more arrivals into Finger Lake, within a 5 minute period! Reddington, Buser, Pettersson, Campeau.
Wag more, bark less.

And Pete Kaiser just blew through Finger Lake. Looks like he stopped to camp en route.
