This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

From skinny legs dogs:
I just received a call from Brett with some disappointing news. For the whole race the "dogs were doing wonderfully." Yesterday afternoon they left Unalakleet checkpoints "happy as larks." Between Unalakleet and Shaktoolik the weather was very warm and they battled a huge storm. By the time they reached Shaktoolik they "looked like different dogs." They won't eat. It is still storming there. Worried that the dogs cannot keep up with the calorie demands required of them as they face the brutal coast and the sea ice in this storm, Brett has chosen to withdraw from the race. Brett is stunned that the situation turned so fast but feels that his dogs' health and safety are more important than a finish.
"We were doing so well. This is not how I expected things to turn out," he said to me over the phone with a tear-filled voice, "But I enjoyed the battle."

Ryan Redington scratches at Shaktoolik checkpoint
Nome, Alaska – Iditarod veteran musher Ryan Redington (bib #22), of Skagway, Alaska, scratched at the Shaktoolik checkpoint at 9:25 a.m. today.
Redington made the decision due to the well-being of his race team, which is his No.1 priority.
He had nine dogs with him at the time he decided to scratch.

Lots of snow, warm weather, several mushers had to use kibble instead of meat because the meat thawed.
...and quite speedy.

The trailing trio-Hardwick, Keller and Gallea-seem to be making very slow time from Eagle I to Koyuk. They've covered about 28 miles in 8 hours and are currently stopped.
