Scratches

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

They all trained for -30°F / -34°C and it was above freezing?

I think it was Jeff Deeter, arriving at the finish yesterday, said it was -55°F outside Nikolai... and then 45°F the day he came in to Nome.

Matthew has scratched from the race. It is our understanding that he got into some water and was unable, though he tried, to continue to move forward on the trail. We received a msg from Matthew that he and the dogs are fine. They are cuddled up together awaiting the rescue crew.

Perhaps that is the reason for the three of them stopping where they did? They stayed together with him waiting for the rescue crew and now someone is mushing the team back?

From itc just now

Very high winds and warm temperatures created very deep overflow of water on a section of the trail near Safety. As a result, Sean Underwood, Tom Knolmayer and Matthew Failor requested assistance and were rescued by helicopter. They are currently being evaluated for precautionary measures. All sled dogs are in good condition and being transferred to Nome at this time. We are reworking this section so that the remaining teams can proceed tomorrow.

More updates to come at Iditarod.com.

Any rookie who doesn't manage to finish this last part of the race should, IMO, no longer be classed as a rookie - having to deal with this.

I'm guessing those that scratched back in Shak/Unk are relieved about their decisions.
