Scratches

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

:o You're right!! That might be quite the task considering it's been trampled by all the teams coming down the steps!!

Heard some talk on alaska radio today that folks think kellers scratch and then choice to mush home rather than get a flight back to be questionable and some folks suggested it was a kind of publicity thing for him. It does seem woerd he would mush home taking days when a flight would have been faster out of there

I thought it might be a money issue. He has to pay to fly him and his dogs out. He is an "off the grid" farmer???

Really? That's weird. They had video of him from Galena, saying that his dogs had caught a bug the second day, but were doing lots better and now on the upswing - even though he wasn't going to win any speed prizes. But he seemed in good spirits and didn't mention any problems.

And Martin Massicotte also scratched in Galena. I'd forgotten about him, after he started out so fast. I think it's hard to switch from mid-distance to long-distance - esp. if you're a racer. Different set of skills and patience.

Very sad to see my ROTY pick Massicotte scratch. He's a perennial Can-Am racer and Quebec is close enough to have made him my "hometown" favorite.

Iditarod only gives a general/generic explanation for scratchs. So I can't help but wonder if the "closing" of checkpoints up the line played into the decision of Fiedler and Massacotte to scratch. Schedules tossed out, messy weather expected but no "shelter" for napping, drying wet clothing? Just musings over coffee this morning.

Edited to add: I see Massacotte was down to 9 dogs. Trail conditions must have put a real damper on their spirits.
