Sad about Joar's lead dog. From what I've seen about him, he may be one of the true greats. Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but Aliy had to drop Commando -- a Yukon Quest Golden Harness lead dog -- at Eagle Island, also. He'd gotten a cut early in the race -- Aliy and vets had been monitoring it and it was healing fine, but Aliy was afraid to take him past EI considering that she'd thus far been able to keep it dry, and beyond EI there was a liklihood of encountering substantial overflow -- didn't think it would be good for him to risk prolonged exposure to river water. There's more about it on SPKennel's website.

Joar, Jessie and Pete all stopped at the same place about 20 miles out of Unk. Joar has been stopped for 45 minutes, Jessie and Pete for just a couple of minutes. :?

Nic mile 727 Run

14 miles behind him are 3 mushers running in group 6 miles long

Joar 713 Run
Jessie R 710 Run
Peter K 707 Run

Seventeen miles behind them is Mitch at 689.

So based on the above, Joar maybe gained a couple of miles on Nic (@ 8 mph = 15 mins ish?), Jessie lost 2-3 miles on Joar (which seems to be pretty typical for her speed), Pete kept the same distance, and Mitch lost maybe a mile or stayed even.

With JJnP resting 20 miles outside Unk, i assume they would run all the way to the shelter cabin at the edge of Norton Sound before their next stop. Where will Nic next rest? With the trail going overland instead of across the sound, are there any cabins further along? Or does he take a gamble, and go Unk-Koyuk in ine go with only a short rest on the way?

A few years ago, I think there was a cabin built just past Shaktoolik that could be a good stop for some. Oops maybe that's located about half way to Shak in the 'Foothills"

Mira I've seen a map from somewhere showing a winter safety cabin half way between Unk and Shak constructed 2010.

Are they resting in a cabin?

Old Woman cabin is around 35 miles from Unalakleet https://iditarod.com/about/the-iditarod ... nalakleet/

Unalakleet is showing as mile 737. So the resting point, at 718 is only 19 miles away. Can't find any info on this. Anyone know?

Sebastian Schnuelle reports that Nome is getting weather

'Nome has gotten another 8 inches of snow overnight. As per Mike Webber: “ Another 8’ since 3 p.m. yesterday. Wet heavy snow. Plows can’t keep roads open.” I have been getting messages like that from him for a while. The snow must be epic in Nome….' https://iditarod.com/musher/morning-update-from-kaltag/

Wonder what it's like at mile 718.
