Koyuk to Elim: This is a critical run.....and White Mountain

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

Well here’s the thing - Mitch just became another of the “leave, turn around and go back” contingent. He got maybe a mile out of Elim before returning.

Looking at times, Travis once again cut his rest short, but to be fair, he gave them 8 in Koyuk. From the tracker they were slow to get going out of Elim (compared to Paige who went out like a rocket).

Ramey Smyth made an hour on Aaron into Elim, so look for him to move up.

And lookit, Pete is already out of WM!

Yesterday, Pete and Joar said the trail was really slow for the first ten miles out of Koyuk - like 2.5 mph slow. Pete did it was weird because it was calm in Shak and calm in Koyuk, but blowing like crazy on the ice. And similarly, there was one section - I think between Koyuk and Elim where it was blowing a hefty side wind however Jessie said she had no wind, justsnow, so it sounds very changeable.

I just read a Sebastian report in which he said that Mitch returned to Elim and announced "I need another cup of coffee". What a crazy year this is turning out to be.

This is just so strange, every time I look and haven't been looking for a while there are some major changes. Where did Paige come from? ..and Mitch turning back. And Jessie H. is finally moving from Koyuk (great!).

It's just so weird.. and really shows how fascinating this is!
