Koyuk to Elim: This is a critical run.....and White Mountain

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Joar cut almost one hour of rest in Elim comparing to Peter, Joar used 10 minutes less than Peter into Elim.

Joar left fifteen minues after Peter.

Mitch used 14 hours to Koyuk.

Jessie Holmes is listed as checked out from Koyuk, but he is still in Koyuk. I rewinded the gps, seems he left, didn't go very far on the ice before he turned back.

Looks like Peters team is a bit faster than Joar.

Jessie Royer is in the hills after Elim (in that area it is very hard to tell anything about speed, seems to be much up and down).

Aliy has 20 miles to go to Elim

Matt Hall is 17 miles behind Aliy

Mitch is 10 miles behind Matt

On their way to Koyuk, Linwood has reached the shore, Mats is still on the ice but very close to land. Wade is about to hit the ice before the spit with the shelter cabin where Matthew is staying. And that is everyone who is on trail north of shaktoolik. On their way to Shaktoolik are Martin Buser, Ritchie Beattie, Lance Mackey and Ed Hopkins. A bit quiet on the trail now..

There was some nice footage of Pete and Joar in White Mountain, talking about how they decided how long to rest in Elim.

Some “awkward pauses”. Pete said he wanted to stay longer, but he didn’t want Joar’s team to get the extra rest so he had to decide how little rest he could give his own team and still get safely over to White Mountain. He asked Joar if his intention was to follow him, Pete, out. Joar said yes, and that he was going indoors to take a nap. Pete told him “nah, we better go and bootie because I’m leaving”. No nap for Joar.

Pete said she didn’t want to be “that guy“ - i.e. wait until Joar went in for the nap then sneak out.

Shows what good competitors they are.

She’s at 886 and WM is 921. She’s just starting to cross the hills between Elim and Golovin Bay.
