White Mountain - Safety - Nome and BOP

This is a forum for general discussion of dogsled racing, with a special focus on Alaska, and is open to all. It is expected that this area will see the most activity during the months leading up to, and during the annual Iditarod sled dog race. Pictures from races can be posted here. Hosting is provided by the Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and the area is open all year. Care to be one of our volunteer moderators? Contact us!

White Mountain - Safety - Nome and BOP

Postby mira » Tue Mar 12, 2019 1:24 pm

There's no place like Nome

Peter Kaiser is resting in White Mountain, Joar will be on his heels, 41 minutes behind. I must admit that I think this is Peters too lose, if nothing happens. But as we all know, there are blowholes, weather and all those things. But I think all the three teams in the front have been very solid and steady.

As for the moment this is top ten:
Peter Kaiser, Joar L. Ulsom, Jessie Royer, Aliy Zirkle, Matt Hall, Mitch Seavey, Travis Beals, Jessie Holmes, Paige Drobny, Aaron Burmeister

I wouldn't have thought that two days ago!

Peter may leave at 16:05 (04:05pm), Joar at 16:46. So if we say 10-11 hours from WM to Nome, that will make finish time at around 02-03AM, Alaska.

If that is correct I had tried to calculate the different time zones:

Alaska time, 02:00:00 (daylight saving time)
pacific time, 03:00:00 (daylight saving time)
mountain time, 04:00:00 (daylight saving time)
central time, 05:00:00 (daylight saving time)
eastern time, 06:00:00 (daylight saving time)
GMT, Europe/London 10:00:00
CET, Europe/Oslo 11:00:00

Pete and Joar are nearly to the blowhole. There’s 5 miles between them.

Jessie left 6 minutes past her earliest opportunity. Pete and Joar will have finished hours before her, and Aliy will follow hours behind her. For some reason, tonight of all nights, I'm thinking about how lonesome it can be on the trail, and yet what a shock it can be to come back into the presence of so many people.

I hope Pete and Joar both can be in the chute for Jessie later today.

And Mitch finally left Elim behind Aaron B. By the looks of things, about the same time frame as Aaron is behind Ramey.
